I LOVE the postpartum season (it's why I'm the kind of doula that cares for mothers after birth!). There’s magic in the way a new mother’s world slows down when everything outside of it keeps moving. The fourth trimester (those first tender months after birth) is the period of time I tell my clients to really invest in resting and renewal—a practice I call the art of cocooning.
What is postpartum cocooning?
When I explain cocooning to new moms, I talk about how it's the practice of creating warmth and stillness so your body and heart can heal. Pregnancy and labor take so much out of you, and creating space to recover is so important! It isn’t a luxury; it’s essential.
Nature is such a great example of this. The seasons are a guide to help us understand what our own rhythms should look like. Fall and winter are seasons where plants and animals draw inward to restore. Postpartum is like that. You need to spend the season resting, nourishing, and chasing warmth to lay the foundation for how you'll reemerge.
If you’re currently preparing for postpartum (or right in the thick of it), here are a few ways to begin creating your own cocoon.
1. Chase warmth
Keep your meals and outfits warm (think nourishing soups, hot teas, and lots of cozy blanekts). Warmth deeply supports circulation, tissue repair, and nervous system regulation—all things your body craves big time postpartum!
2. Nourish with intention
Choose foods that feel grounding and easy to digest: soups, broths, porridges, stewed fruits, and simple proteins. These help replenish blood, stabilize energy, and support healing.

3. Simplify your world
Lower the lights. Soften the room. Keep your environment calm and uncluttered. Small sensory cues remind your body that it’s safe to rest.
4. Let yourself be supported
Whether it’s a partner, parent, friend, or postpartum doula, let someone care for you. Let them hold the baby while you shower. Refill your water. Cook while you nap. You deserve tending, too.

5. Honor your pace
There is no timeline for recovery—only your rhythm. Cocooning gives you permission to move slowly and listen closely to what your body and heart need.

Contrary to what so much of social media and the world tells you, the fourth trimester isn’t about bouncing back. It’s about supporting and caring for your baby and this new version of yourself. When you allow yourself to cocoon, you create space for healing, integration, and a steadier reemergence.
