Charlotte mom Liz Ferguson proves a baby boy’s nursery can be classic, cozy, and completely unique. With toddler Elle (2.5) and newborn James (13 weeks), she designed a space with charcoal walls, brass accents, and thoughtful handmade textiles. The result is a room that’s perfectly sweet for a newborn yet ready to grow right alongside James. Let’s take a tour, shall we?

Let’s start with a short + sweet intro! Tell us about you and your fam.

Solly: What was the look and feel you were going for as you designed your son’s nursery?
Liz: I envisioned a timeless design that could grow with him through the years. Since the room is on the larger side, I chose rich charcoal walls to create a warm, cozy atmosphere. Wood and brass accents add a touch of classic, masculine elegance, while red ticking stripes on the drapes and pillows bring a crisp, tailored detail. To balance it all, a beautiful blue-and-red striped fabric on the crib skirt ties the palette together and adds a playful yet sophisticated finish.
Solly: Can you share a little bit about the process of putting it together?
Liz: This room was originally my husband’s office, so the first step was clearing it out and reimagining it as a nursery. I began by pulling inspiration onto a Pinterest board to get a sense of the look and feel I wanted. Once the design direction came together, I visited local fabric and rug shops to select the drapery and carpet. One of the most special touches is that my mom, who is a wonderful sewer, lovingly made the pillows and crib skirt by hand.

Solly: Did you add or change anything once baby arrived?
Liz: I haven’t made any updates since finishing the nursery, but in the future I’d love to add a blue grasscloth wallpaper for extra texture and depth. For now, though, the deep charcoal paint feels just right. A budget-friendly choice that gives the room the cozy, sophisticated look we were hoping for.

Solly: Favorite thing about the nursery?
Liz: One of my favorite spots in the nursery is the corner with the glider and side table. We spend so much time here nursing, reading, and cuddling. The chair is incredibly comfortable, and the fact that it reclines makes it even better.
Solly: Since we know people want to know—are there any product sources you could share?
Liz: Yes!
