7 Ways to Beat the Heat with Babies + Toddlers This Summer

When the temperature climbs, caring for babies and toddlers can turn into the hot mess express—emphasis on hot. From sticky car seats to sunscreen struggles, summer with little ones has its fair share of challenges, and plenty of moments worth enjoying too (hello sticky popsicle smiles, sprinkler sessions, and adorable sun hats!).

If you’re gearing up for warm days ahead, here are some simple, kid-friendly ways to stay cool and comfortable while making the most of the season.

1. Go for a stroll
There’s something extra peaceful about strolling your neighborhood just after sunrise or as the sun begins to dip. Bring baby along with you in the wrap (it's super breathable and light—ideal for warm-weather babywearing!), or bring your toddler along in the stroller. You'll all enjoy starting or ending your day by moving together.

2. Water (In Any Form!)
You don’t need a beach or pool to feel refreshed—though if you have either nearby, go make the most of them! If those aren’t in the cards though, a kiddie pool in the backyard, a gently spraying sprinkler, or a splash pad at the park is enough to bring joy. Babies can kick and giggle, toddlers can splash and pour, and you can delight in their fun.

3. Frozen Treats for All
There’s nothing more refreshing than a frozen treat on a hot day. Try breastmilk popsicles for your youngest or pour your favorite smoothie blend into silicone molds for toddlers. These slow-melting snacks nourish little bodies and give you both a moment to pause and enjoy.

4. Find the Shade
Parks are best in the early hours or golden evenings—when the sun is low and the play structures cast long, cool shadows. Choose places with trees, water features, or covered spaces. Lay out a soft blanket, pack plenty of water, and let the breeze do its work.

5. Refresh Your Routine
When the heat keeps you indoors, look to the ordinary with new eyes. Rotate toys. Build a fort with couch cushions. Fill a small bin with cool, damp cloths and let little hands explore. There’s wonder hiding in every corner if we’re willing to see it.

6. Dress with Breathability in Mind
Gentle fabrics can make all the difference when temperatures rise. Choose lightweight, natural materials—like organic cotton, linen, or modal—that allow your little one’s skin to breathe.

7. Create a Cooling Kit
Tuck a few essentials in the fridge or cooler before you head out: chilled wipes, a misting spray bottle, slices of cucumber or watermelon. Small things that offer big relief.

No matter your plans, the key to staying cool with little ones when temps rise is planning ahead and staying flexible. Keep an eye on the forecast, take breaks as needed, and always bring along essentials like water, snacks, and light, breathable clothes. A little preparation will go a long way in making even the hottest days with your family feel like a breeze!
