At home with Sarah Sherman Samuel
She's a designer, maker, wife and mother. She's a total sweetheart and she's finding inspiration in the most beautiful place; motherhood. We spent a gorgeous sunny Southern California morning with Sarah and her sweet little baby boy at her picture-perfect home where she shared some of her current favorites with us. 01. Your entire home is jaw-droppingly gorgeous. It's so full of light and, naturally, perfectly designed. I know this is a hard question, but which room is your favorite and why? Oh thank you! I'd have to say the master bedroom. While we renovated the entire existing house, this room was an addition so we built it from the ground up. Instead of trying to fit into someone else's space I got to create this one from scratch. The high ceilings, glass patio doors, and tall windows give the space the most beautiful light, and the upholstered headboard and Persian rug make it just the right amount of cozy. 02. I'm sure you get this all the time but we'd love it if you could share some of your favorite home decor shops with us! I love Emperic Studio, Lawson Fenning, and HD Buttercup and I always have pretty good luck at flea markets and vintage shops. I also frequently look to CB2, West Elm, and Anthropologie. 03. You are such a creative powerhouse. Where do you go for inspiration and how has being a new mom influenced your design choices? I'm constantly seeking out inspiration everywhere. It's been a little harder while staying at home so much with a new babe but it's all over... the way the light hits an object, finding patterns in shadows etc. I'm also a huge color nerd and get inspired by seeing unusual palettes and pairings. When I'm more mobile, I'm most inspired while traveling, exploring new cities, the architecture, the fashion, and the landscape. So far being a new mom hasn't changed my design aesthetic or choices much at all, just gives me a new medium to play in which is great. Well designed baby and kids items that don't necessarily look like baby or kids things are few and far between and so much fun to search out and create!
04. How are you balancing having a new baby and your blog, shop, and design projects? Has it been harder or easier than you anticipated? It is definitely a balancing act and so far I just take it a day at a time. I have to say no to projects more often these days, as my time is more divided, but that means I only take on things that I'm the most passionate about and that makes the quality of work even better. I think it has actually been easier than I anticipated. But, ask me again in a few months, when he is crawling, and I'll probably have a different answer. People love to warn a pregnant woman how "everything changes" and how you get no sleep and to "enjoy this or that while you can" but I was pleasantly surprised how much remained the same. My interests are still the same and now we have another one of us in the house that we will get to share all our passions with. It sounds weird to say but I am still me! I'm a designer, wife, friend, daughter, sister, and now I am thrilled that I get to add mother. 05. What's next on the horizon? What are some dream collaborators or projects you'd like to take on? I am re-designing the blog right now and am in the process of combining the shop, blog, and my design work all under one site. With the re-design I will also be launching some exciting new product collaborations that have been under works for a while. As far as dream projects, I'm dying to get into wallpaper and more textile based goods. For more photos of Sarah, please visit the Lookbook
