March: Inspire

March 5, 2019

What kind of parent did you dream you’d be? Have you taken the time to ask yourself lately? Whenever I am in a slump as a mother, it’s generally because somewhere along the way I stopped envisioning and started just surviving. It can feel too daunting to stop and imagine what I really want our time together to look like and the kind of mother I want to be when I’m in the thick of it, but when I take even just a minute to get more intentional, my whole perspective shifts. It’s never perfect (not even close!), but it’s enough to start making memories again rather than counting down until bedtime. This is the month to get inspired in your parenthood. You can be the mother you always thought you’d be. Whether you work or stay-at-home or something in-between, let’s pause, dream a bit, and then make it a reality.

February: Connection

February 2, 2019

I’ve birthed four babies. Some of those babies I felt connected to in the womb and others it wasn’t until months after they were born before I felt the same level of connection. I knew I loved them, but the connection was different. It was easy to judge myself for that, like it was something to be embarrassed of or represented a deficiency in my ability to love or mother, but it’s something I’ve let go of. Relationships develop differently, rarely do they come in a single moment and that’s just fine. Judging it, resisting it, and shaming ourselves only brings us further from authentic connection. I’m so excited to explore our #motheryourself theme of *connection* more this month. Whether you’re wanting to feel more connected to your baby, your partner, yourself, or someone you don’t even know (you know Oprah, Joanna Gaines and I are all 3 BFFs, right?) there are many things we can do to increase that connection and I’ll be sharing them all throughout the month. Join me here & on IG Live (almost) every Thursday at noon PST!

January: Renew

January 3, 2019

You did so much last year. You may not think you did, but I promise you that you did. Some of you may not have included how many school lunches you made or finding your way through postpartum depression or how many times you got up with a fussy baby or going back to work after maternity leave on your Christmas card, but they should be acknowledged somewhere. I made myself a list of all the things I did last year. Everything from staying mostly patient with a teething toddler to grieving personal loss to running and growing this company. Then I thanked myself. I actually typed it out – THANK YOU, SELF. I think you should do it too. This is the month for renewal. It’s not the month to think about all you didn’t do last year and then guilt yourself into doing more this year. Renewal comes from recognizing all that you did do and, coming from that place of gratitude and compassion, deciding what you WANT to do this year. Or just this month. Or just today.

December: Cultivating Joy

November 30, 2018

We often search for joy as if it’s something we chase, we catch it for a moment and then it escapes us again. We look for it in the future, thinking if we are just a little better parents or thinner or more successful we will catch it once and for all. Even when we do feel it, generally fear of disappointment or embarrassment or loss or unworthiness are the thieves that come in right as the joy was about to settle in, pretending to save us from future danger. I don’t believe that anymore. I don’t need negative emotion to protect from possible future negative emotion. When I feel joy, I am learning to LEAN INTO IT.

To read Ellie Coburn’s story is to witness limitless kindness and love (and to want to foster all the babies!). She is mama to three beautiful foster children ages 15 weeks, 16 months and nine, with an adoption underway and a revolving door for any new placements and circumstances. Reading about her foster care experience- what she calls her “heart calling”- is perfect evidence of the joy motherhood brings in any and every form.

For November’s #motheryourself theme, I’m starting a new trend. It’s called “radical gratitude” (because doesn’t that sound like a perfectly obnoxious, new wave phrase?). It’s really just glass half-full kind of thinking. In any situation, but especially the hardest ones, the most stressful, the most annoying, the most heartbreaking, the most overwhelming, when my brain wants to complain and whine and give up, but instead of indulging in negative thoughts, I am going to think of something to be grateful for … to an almost ridiculous extent because WHY NOT? You may call it unicorns and rainbows delusions but I call it unicorns and rainbows are the FUTURE.

Last month my mantra was to cut the junk in a serious way. We moved into a smaller home, cut our monthly expenses in half, donated half of our things, simplified our family calendar all the way down to our meals, and, more importantly, I’ve been “Marie Kondo’ing” my brain. I’ve been thinking about everything that fills my time, especially as a mother and business owner, that may have lost its intention. Things that have become habit that no longer serve me or my family or our community and even things I do simply out of good old-fashioned FOMO. I wonder how many things we could all stop doing that would actually add clarity and deeper meaning and impact to the things that we are doing?

It’s not about saying no or not trying new things, it’s about recognizing that every time we say no, we are saying yes to something else and vice versa. Saying no to soccer season this year may mean saying yes to family dinners two more nights of the week, saying no to scrolling Instagram may mean saying yes to reading that book you’ve been carrying around, saying no to that weekend trip you felt obligated to go but didn’t want to may mean giving yourself permission to rest and relax this weekend instead.

In my life, simplicity means less of the things that don’t truly add value to my life and more of the things that do. Here’s to a month of more with less!
