In light of recent media attention regarding the safety of swaddling, we are sharing this guest post by Dr. Rallie McAllister MD, MPH. Dr. Rallie is a nationally recognized physician, known for the nationally syndicated newspaper column, Your Health. She has authored hundreds of other health articles on a variety of health-related websites, including,,,, and to name a few.

One of the hardest parts of being a mom is making the best, safest choices for your children. This is often complicated by changing, conflicting medical advice and media reports.

Case in point is the May 2016 Pediatrics study that questioned the safety of swaddling and implicated swaddling in increased risk of SIDS.

In our Tweet-length-attention-span world, the nuances of studies like these are quickly lost. To make matters worse, over-simplified, headline-grabbing sound bites don’t come anywhere close to telling the full story.

Here are important points to understand:

• This study was a review of a handful of previously published studies. It didn’t include new research designed to study swaddling in depth.

• The studies didn’t clearly define “swaddling.” It’s not possible to know if the babies who died of SIDS were swaddled safely and correctly and using products made specifically for swadding—or if these babies had been “swaddled” incorrectly.

• One of the findings of the study is that babies are at risk for SIDS when they sleep on their stomachs. This was already a clearly established risk—and it’s a risk whether a baby is swaddled or not.

First Trimester Favorites_v2_600px

Pregnancy comes with its fair share of excitement and anticipation and tender moments, but my first trimester requires a survival guide. With growing bumps, hormones out of whack and touchy nausea, I’ve kept a list of (and clung to) my tried and true lifesavers. Here’s to looking, and sometimes feeling, like you are keeping it all together!


To Wear — 

1. Seamless day bra – I have one in almost every color. They’re so comfortable, super inexpensive, and perfect for sensitive and ever-changing, pregnancy boobs.

2. V-neck caftan – A little pricey but my favorite splurge this pregnancy. I had an event earlier this month that called for dressier attire but I couldn’t get excited about anything in this awkward, transition phase where maternity clothes aren’t necessary (or wanted, as I hadn’t shared the news yet) but of course, I still wanted to feel chic and put together. This dress was so comfortable and hid my already noticeable bump perfectly without looking frumpy. Can’t wait to wear this all the way through this pregnancy and beyond.

Baby Mama Beauty — 

3. BB cream – My skin freaked on me this pregnancy in a way it never has. I try to wear a light BB cream, if anything, to keep from irritating it more.

4. Oil-free foundation – When I do need to get more dressed up, then this oil-free but high coverage foundation is an instant fix.

To Feel Better — 

5. Ginger ale – The best ginger ale ever and a total lifesaver for nausea. My sister-in-law brought it to me on my worst day and I’ve been trying to figure out how to get it plugged into an IV ever since.

6. Ginger mints – Ginger in all its forms eases my pregnancy sickness. More ginger goodness when you’re sick of drinking it.

To Catch a Break — 

7. Floor coloring pages – I found this French company at the shop-up we participated in last month in LA. I brought home a large size poster for my kids and they were all three totally engaged. All the while I sat on the sofa next to them, sometimes participating, but mostly just lying there, sick as a dog and happy they felt like I was a part of it.

8. Netflix – The next time you’re up with heartburn or you wake up at 2 AM every morning for no apparent reason (don’t you love it when people tell you it’s because your body is preparing you to be awake all night when the baby comes?), I recommend binge watching Tina Fey’s Netflix series “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.” You’ll laugh so hard you won’t care that you’re awake.

It’s been a little over five years since I had my first child. Upon his arrival I was overwhelmed with love for this new life that was cradled in my arms. It was a love no one could ever prepare me for, and it took my breath away on regular basis. In that time I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by a loving community that stopped by with gifts, flowers and best of all, food.

Fast forward 9 months later, my husband and I found out we were having another baby. That was a shock, to put it mildly. Just as I was caught off guard by this second pregnancy, I was unprepared when he arrived an entire week early, with a delivery so fast I struggled to wrap my brain around what had just happened. My then 17 month old had a nasty cough and cold, it was snowing in March, and our unfinished bathroom remodel left us without a shower. Unlike with the birth of our first born, my husband had to return to work quickly, and in those first few days I experienced emotions I didn’t even know existed within me. The crying went from the typical post pregnancy hormone tears to straight up ugly crying real quick. I knew I needed help, but I had no clue where to even begin to ask. I did this once, I should be able to do it again, right?

That first year of our second born’s life was extremely eye opening and raw for me. It wasn’t until he was 18 months old that my husband and I were even able to talk about some of the feelings we were experiencing, and things we had gone through. It was in that conversation that I was finally able to express that my greatest desire was for someone to just take care of me. I wanted someone to feel sorry for me and to genuinely ask how I was doing, because in that time, I was not okay. Like most hard things in life, we survive. We find it in ourselves to draw from an unseen strength and rise to meet the needs of our families. And I did just that, survived. Where I found that I failed miserably was meeting my own needs. I was exhausted, underweight, unhappy, and overwhelmed. When I was finally able to look in the mirror and see myself again, I made a vow to offer nurture to the other mom’s I knew who were in the throws of adjusting to life with a newborn, because I knew just how tough it could be, and I knew what I had needed so desperately.

Part of preparing myself for this cause was creating an arsenal of recipes that were delicious, home-cooked, protein-packed, healthy, comforting and great for leftovers: the perfect meals to bring new moms in the midst of the struggle. Tortilla soup is at the top of my ever-growing list. While food is an obvious physical provision for new moms, I like to think of it simply as an offering that opens the door to ask the question “how are you really doing?” and offer reassurance that she is in fact doing a great job and yes, she will survive.





Chicken Tortilla Soup
Serves 6

1 rotisserie chicken
1 (15 oz) can diced fire roasted tomatoes
1 (10 oz) can red enchilada sauce
1 small onion, chopped
1 zucchini, large chopped
1 (4 oz) can chopped green chilies
4 cloves of garlic, minced
3 (14.5 oz) cans chicken broth
1 (14.5 oz) can creamed or sweet corn
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
3 bay leaves

Serve with:
4 tablespoons cilantro, chopped
fresh lime juice
sour cream
cheddar cheese, shredded
corn chips, crushed

While rotisserie chicken is still warm, pick all meat of the bones. Place chicken meat in a large soup pot. Discard bones, or save if you like to make homemade stock. Place all ingredients from roasted tomatoes through bay leaves in the same pot as the chicken. Turn heat to high. As soon as soup begins to boil, turn to medium-low heat and continue to cook until onions as translucent and zucchini is tender. About 30 minutes.
Serve soup with chopped cilantro, fresh lime juice, sour cream, cheddar cheese, avocado and corn chips.

I am constantly on the hunt to find fresh colors and prints that you’ll feel excited to wear, and not just because of the sweet little one that will be inside of it. There’s no reason babywearing shouldn’t be as fun as it is functional! As much as I love the style component of our product, versatility is always a top priority. Just like mothers have to wear multiple hats every day, ready for just about anything, your wrap should be too. Every shade and print can be worn around the house, around town, and for a night out on the town. We go through literally hundreds of shades every season until every single one passes that criteria.

This season I was inspired by natural elements that have just enough color to feel fun but are muted enough to encourage calm, inside and out. Baltic, one of my favorites because the shade is so perfectly neutral and chic, reading like a chambray or a denim, was inspired by our trip to Stockholm. We arrived at our little Scandinavian cabin on an archipelago surrounded by the Baltic Sea, serene and a deep blue, halfway through our six week adventure. Walking across the street to the still and peaceful sea was exactly what we all needed to recenter. Every time I see this shade of blue it brings me back to skipping stones on the water as my youngest slept soundly in the wrap.

I can’t wait to share more of the colors with you this season and the inspiration behind each color.
